Mermaid Bathroom Time!
So I've finally decided that I'm going to make my guest bathroom this pink ruffly girly mermaid explosion of fantasticness. It's gonna be AHMAZING.
So first thing first I decided to make this mermaid scale art that i saw on pinterest. That should be the first clue that something is going to go awful. Cause of Pinterest. This is my inspiration. That color was totally too plain and simple for me. At first I thought i want all these iridescent purples and greens and pinks (you know like a mermaid scale) and then i thought that would be too much. And honestly, when I think to myself something is going to be too much. It's probably really too much. So I kept my eye out and thought about the obvious choice. Glitter. Well that seemed to be a bit too much as well.
So I was walking through Michaels and found this fantastic pink - turquoise scrapbook paper on sale. It's not any of the colors I currently had in the room, but I fell in love with it the moment that I saw it. I had some plain chocolate brown paper already and So i added that in there, Because I have brown towels and a brown floor rug in the bathroom.
The next thing I found (and as part of my original plan had previously purchased) was this really pretty iridescent origami paper, It was a little expensive and that was another reason why that plan went out the window, but I thought that instead of adding glitter scales, this would be a delicate touch and not overpower the whole thing.
Then the circle cutting began. I used my silhouette and my cricut, I'm spoiled and I have both, so it made this process go really fast, but you could totally just use a circle punch and just knock out circles. I did 8 sheets of the origami paper and 3 sheets of the 6 colors of 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock. For the size frame that I used. I could tell you that you could do the math and find out how many you really needed, but I just went with it. I had plenty and still have some leftover. I'll probably make one for my office. My circles where 2 inches. I originally thought about 1 inch circles but I'm really glad I went with the two inches.
Here they are all cut out. The other look i wanted to go with was random. I have this complete love of the gradient look, seriously all the yarn I dye is gradient now. But for this I really thought the crazy randomness would look spectacular, so I threw it all in a box and just pulled out colors at random.
I used the back of the frame (hello Ikea and all of your fabulousness) and marked off lines at 1 inche increments using the mat that came with the frame as a guide on where i needed to start and stop.

Here you can totally see all the lines (in pink of course)
the first line starts with half the circle in the mat and half hidden just like this:
and from here you just keep on filling in circles, alternating starting at the line and lining up the half with the outside line.
doesn't' it look amazing!?!?!
the one thing you should watch out for if you are going for this random look is to make sure that none of the same colors touch. that was the only time I put a circle back was if there was one of that color touching what i was about to glue down. Now, the other thing, I only hot glued a dot at the top. Just so the scales would sort of have some depth. I didn't want them to just lay flat.
